Swimming Mermaid Craft

Any mermaid fans out there? My daughter loves mermaids and she inspired me to create this swimming mermaid craft. We had so much fun creating our mermaids together and then making them swim around in their own little “ocean” made from a paper plate!

Your kiddos can easily make their own swimming mermaids too. With a few simple craft supplies and the free printable, you will have a sweet little mermaid swimming around your house in no time.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • White cardstock for Free Printable
  • Markers
  • Paper plate
  • Acrylic, washable, or tempera paint
  • Yarn in seaweed colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Tacky glue
  • Popsicle stick

Here’s the free printable you’ll need to make this craft:

First, print the free printable on white cardstock. Color the mermaid and seashells and cut them all out carefully with scissors.

Next, paint the paper plate to make the mermaid’s underwater background. I mixed some acrylic paint to get the right colors for the sand and water. Paint the popsicle stick to match the background. Let the paint dry before moving on to the next step.

When the paint is dry, cut a slit across the bottom of the paper plate. Glue the seashells to the ocean floor. Add yarn glued in place to make seaweed. Glue the back of the mermaid to the popsicle stick.

Put the bottom of the popsicle stick through the slit in the paper plate. Hold the stick behind the paper plate to make the mermaid “swim”.

This is such a fun craft that kids can customize in so many ways. Kids can even color their background with markers instead of paint or cut paper to make seaweed if they choose. Be creative!

Each swimming mermaid is sure to be unique. Share your child’s creation in the Kids Craft Studio Community Facebook Group. I can’t wait to see all the different swimming mermaids!

Happy crafting!
